Hackers blocked access to Indiana's state government website Friday afternoon in retaliation to the state's controversial "religious freedom" bill being signed into law this week.
Some users were unable to access the state's website, www.in.gov, the Indianapolis Star reported.
"Indiana, like many other states, has been targeted with a denial of service interruption," said Indiana Office of Technology spokesman Graig Lubsen. "The website was not hacked. A denial of service attack consists of sending many traffic requests at the same time in order to overwhelm a website and have it not be able to load. The denial of service interruption began at approximately 2:00, but the site has not been continuously down."
He said the site faced "intermittent outages" but never a full shutdown.
