At least one 2012 presidential candidate is reaching out to a well-known businessman that decided not to run for the GOP nomination.

Fox News has learned Texas Gov. Rick Perry has made at least four phone calls to New York businessman Donald Trump since joining the field earlier this month.

Trump flirted for weeks with the idea of running for the GOP nomination before deciding against it. But he has recently held out the idea that he could run for president as an independent if he's unhappy with the GOP selection.

Politico reported Friday that Perry rival Mitt Romney has also called Trump recently and a Trump spokesman told the newspaper that the candidate calls are proof of his relevance in the race and a testament to the importance of his endorsement.
