Democratic Rep. Gabrielle Giffords' campaign is asking the Federal Election Commission whether she can use donations to help pay for security improvements recommended by the U.S. Capitol Police.
Officers recommended about $2,200 worth of security improvements to her family's home in Houston. Giffords stays there when she's not undergoing therapy that's required as a result of being shot in the head last January.
Officers suggested better exterior lighting and the installation of an alarm button that can be pushed in emergencies, among other things.
The request fits within a precedent established two years ago. The FEC ruled then that Republican Rep. Elton Gallegly of California could use campaign funds to make security improvements in response to a man who had repeatedly violated a restraining order.
