Americans are losing their confidence in the Secret Service to protect President Obama after a wannabe reality-TV couple crashed the White House's first state dinner this month, according to a new Fox News poll.
Fifty nine percent expressed confidence in the Secret Service, down from 66 percent in January, while 39 percent were doubtful that the agency could protect the president, up from 32 percent.
In a related question, 37 percent of poll respondents blamed the White House staff for allowing uninvited guests Michaele and Tareq Salahi to slip through Secret Service security at a state dinner in honor of Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and his wife. Thirty five percent blamed the Secret Service and 17 percent pointed the finger at both.
The Secret Service is currently conducting a criminal investigation into the security breach.
The Salahis are expected to testify next month at a House Homeland Security Committee hearing on the security breach after the panel voted Wednesday to subpoena the Virginia couple. But the Salahis have said they will exercise their Fifth Amendment rights if they are summoned to testify.
White House social secretary Desiree Rogers will likely not testify after the committee rejected an effort by its top Republican, Rep. Peter King of New York, to subpoena her.
An overwhelming majority of poll respondents, 82 percent, said they have never crashed a party while 17 percent acknowledged they have.
