Former Gov. Arch Alfred Moore Jr., whose guilty pleas to federal corruption charges overshadowed his record as his era's most successful Republican in Democrat-dominated West Virginia, has died. He was 91.
The three-term governor who died Wednesday evening also was a congressman, state legislator and father of U.S. Rep. Shelley Moore Capito.
Moore first won public office in 1952. He was the first West Virginia governor since the late 1800s to succeed himself and remained the only one to hold three full terms.
Moore pleaded guilty to five corruption charges in 1990, but later argued he was innocent.
He attempted to regain his law license, lost upon his criminal convictions, but was rebuffed in a unanimous 2003 state Supreme Court ruling.
