Published December 23, 2015

Associated Press

Maine's former Democratic U.S. Rep. Peter Kyros has died at age 86.

Kyros represented Maine's 1st Congressional District from 1967 to 1975, a turbulent period that included the Vietnam War and the Watergate scandal. He initially was supportive of war policies but later spoke out against them.

The Portland native worked on war ships in Bath at the start of World War II and enlisted in the Navy in 1943. He graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy and after leaving the Navy in 1954 received a law degree from Harvard Law School. He was recruited by Maine's Sen. Edmund Muskie to run for Congress in 1966.

Washington, D.C., funeral home Joseph Gawler's Sons Inc. says Kyros died Tuesday. It says a funeral will be held Sunday.

No cause of death has been announced.
