Republican presidential candidates roundly condemned Donald Trump's comments calling for a "total and complete" ban on Muslims entering the United States. Ted Cruz took a slightly different approach in expressing his contrary point of view.
Cruz, who ranks second in the Washington Examiner's GOP presidential power rankings behind Trump, is courting The Donald's support and likely does not want to turn off any voters. In audio shared by the Cruz campaign, the Texas senator says that he would not support a ban on all Muslims entering the United States, and that Islamism is a "profound threat" to U.S. national security.
"Just to be crystal clear, would you support a policy that prohibits Muslims from entering this country, including as tourists?" a reporter asks.
"No, that is not my policy," Cruz answered. "I believe the focus should focus on radical Islamic terrorism. And we need to be directly focused on threats to the United States. We need a commander-in-chief that perceives what the threat is and then targets all of our resources to protecting this nation against radical Islamic terrorists."
