A Wisconsin businessman who spent millions on a largely self-financed campaign has breezed into a November matchup with incumbent Sen. Russ Feingold.
Ron Johnson crushed small-business owner Dave Westlake in Tuesday's Republican primary.
Johnson had the state party's backing. Much of his campaign this summer was spent positioning himself against Feingold, the Democrat looking for his fourth term. The pair already have traded a number of TV attack ads.
Johnson is the president of Pacur, an Oshkosh-based plastics company. He has vowed to repeal health care reform and cut government spending.
Feingold has touted his record of independence and willingness to vote against the Democratic Party line.
In other races, Milwaukee County Executive Scott Walker has survived a well-funded challenge by former Congressman Mark Neumann to win the Republican Party nomination in the Wisconsin governor's race.
Neumann spent more than $4 million of his own money. But he couldn't overcome Walker, who won the Republican Party's endorsement in May and has spent years preparing for the race.
Walker will take on Democrat Tom Barrett in the general election.
Neumann is a real estate developer who spent two terms in Congress in the 1990s. He tried to cast himself as a political outsider and branded Walker as a career politician. Walker has been in elective office since 2002.
