Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is taking her fight for sweeping immigration reform right to Donald Trump’s doorstep.
The rising democratic socialist star didn’t let a little rain stop her from joining a crowd of protesters calling on the Trump administration to let migrants in the country on Temporary Protected Status orders stay permanently.
The freshman Democrat addressed the crowd, saying: “We are here to make sure that all TPS recipients become permanent members of the United States of America.
“We are fighting for the longstanding principle and the longstanding that the people who built this country, stay in this country.
“And we are part of the long, long fight for the people whose hands built this country be honored and respected in the United States of America.”
Ocasio-Cortez’s remarks drew cheers from the crowd. Rep. Ayanna Pressley, D-Mass., also spoke at the rally, and said she hopes the White House can “see the humanity” in TPS holders, according to The Hill.
The event was organized by the National TPS Alliance.
TPS is a program that allows certain immigrants who have fled armed conflicts or natural disasters – such as those from El Salvador and Haiti – to live and work in the U.S. for a limited time.
