The news from Washingtonis encouraging. With Democrats and Republicans facing off in a heated spat, President Obamaintervened to broker a compromise. Taking turns meeting privately with House Speaker Nancy Pelosiand GOPleaders, Obama used his smarts and charm to fashion a deal that resulted in broad, bipartisan support for the budget.

Oops, beg pardon. Right guy, but wrong continent and wrong dispute.

Yes, Obama did play peacemaker among rivals, but it was not in bitterly polarized Washington. It was in London, among his G-20peers, where he demonstrated the come-together leadership appeal that helped him win the presidency.

His early performance was so winning that if the heads of state had chosen a "Mr. Congeniality," Obama would have won in a cakewalk.
