Just as its name implies, hot chocolate brown is the same rich, luscious color as the drink you might sip on a chilly evening. Not only does it create a bold statement for any occasion, but this color adds oomph and a generous helping of shine. And for those hesitant of going over to the dark side, swirls of golden caramel highlights can easily lighten up the look, and lend a youthful, glowing appearance.
“To create a rich, brunette shade of brown color, you want to make sure you use a warm chocolate brown — not ash brown,” says Beverly Hills-based celebrity hairstylist Nelson Chan. “Your goal is to have a brown color with a golden undertone. The gold tone in the brown will create shine and richness to the color.”
“Second, make sure this brown is not too dark or too light,” he adds. “Stay at dark or medium brown: not black, not very dark brown, and not light brown. Black kills the gold tone in brown and makes it look flat. Light brown will appear too faded out; there will be no shine or rich color.”

Thinking about going hot chocolate brown? As with any dye job, it’s highly recommended to make an appointment with a colorist you trust, and be prepared to bring plenty of photos to achieve the tone you really want. If you’re a naturally brunette, and don’t want to fully dyeing your hair, try a glaze, which will enhance your natural hair color and bring out your highlights.
Also, take into consideration the condition of your hair. If it's over-processed and dry, try conditioning treatments before the actual dye appointment for sleeker results.
