    DIY: Placemat to Pillow

    Sometimes, placemats are just too pretty to eat off of. Katy Follis from Sweet Verbena shows us a clever way to turn them into decorative throw pillows.

  • Materials:
    Placemat(s) Pillows to reuse or store-bought fiber filling Seam ripper (scissors work too, if you're careful)

  • Step 1:
    Select a side of the placemat and start ripping out the seam.

  • Step 2:
    Keep going until you have about a six-inch gap, or enough room for your hand to fit through.

  • Step 3:
    Pull out the stuffing from an older pillow. If you don't have any that you're willing to sacrifice, try looking in a thrift store or purchase fiber filling at a craft store. To avoid a lumpy look, shred the fluffs by pulling them apart with both hands.

  • Step 4:
    Stuff the placemat, taking care to reach all corners and sides. You can also use a recycled or store-bought pillow insert.

    Pin the gap closed.

    Carefully sew the seam shut. If you don't have a sewing machine, you can also hand sew or use steam-a-seam for this step.
