    Super Bowl 50 food by the numbers

    Super Bowl is the second largest US food consumption day, only surpassed by Thanksgiving. Viewers will spend an average of $82.19 on food, decor and team apparel, up from $77.88 last year. If you're not already shocked by how much we're buying--and eating--for the big showdown between the Carolina Panthers and Denver Broncos, chew on these facts.

  • Chicken Wings
    More than 1.3 billion wings are expected to be consumed during Super Bowl weekend, according to the National Chicken Council, a trade association for companies that raise broiler chickens and make chicken products. That breaks out to about 4 wings for every person. The group's estimate assumes demand will be up 3 percent, or 37.5 million wings, from last year's big game.

  • Ranch Dressing
    Move over bleu cheese.  Almost 57 percent of Americans who eat chicken wings say they like to dip their wings ranch dressing, according to a new National Chicken Council poll.  Only about 35 percent go for the bleu cheese dressing –unless you live in Northeast, where it’s nearly 50 percent.

  • Pizza
    Super Bowl Sunday is the busiest day of the year for pizza restaurants, according to the National Restaurant Association.  Domino's expects to sell 12 million slices of pizza on Feb. 7 -- five times more than a typical Sunday. Pizza Hut is prepping to sell more than 2 million pizzas.

    Wings and pizza are the two most popular Super Bowl snacks, but potato chips are close behind. Some 11.2 million pounds of potato chips Some are expected to be consumed on Sunday, as well as an estimated 4 million pounds of pretzels and 2.5 million pounds of nuts.

    Avocado Luckily avocado is a super food, because Americans are expected to eat some 139 million pounds of avocados (about 278 million individual avocados) in the run-up to and on this year's Super Bowl Sunday, up 13% from 2015. Now, if you could avoid eating all those chips --but they go sooo good together.

    Get popping.  Americans will eat about 3.8 million pounds of popcorn while watching the big game, according to the Calorie Control Council. If you skip the butter, it could be one of the day's healthiest snacks.

    The Super Bowl is second-biggest grilling weekend of the year --the 4th of July is first.  Some 14 billion hamburgers will be served up at parties across the country.

    Nothing goes better with football than beer. Some 51.7 million cases of beer are sold every year on the day of the Super Bowl.  No wonder about 6 percent of American call in sick for work the next day.
