Looks like the record for world’s largest bagel and lox sandwich is about to get smoked.
That’s the goal of today’s event at Greenpoint’s Acme Smoked Fish Corp., a wholesaler that opens its doors to sell fish to the public for just five hours every Friday morning.
The Gem Street market draws a legendary weekly line. But that’s nothing compared to the crowd that’s gathered today to watch — and eventually nibble on — Acme’s Guinness World Record-breaking attempt.
The century-old business has joined forces with NYC mainstay Zucker’s Bagels & Smoked Fish to create the schmear spread around the world.
Acme’s team began by spreading a reported 40 pounds of cream cheese on a kiddie-pool-size plain bagel. Next came 30 pounds of smoked salmon and enough sliced red onions, tomatoes and capers to cover every bite — and stink up the whole block, presumably.
After placing the top on the monster bagel, the assemblers proceeded to take the sandwich’s official measurements. The monstrosity weighed in at 213.75 pounds.
Livestrong estimates that a medium-size bagel with cream cheese comes in around 320 calories. So Acme’s version has an approximate calorie count of a zillion.
But portion control helps — the Acme guys came prepared to share. Using a garden-variety saw, they cut through their creation.
No word yet on how it tastes, or whether Guinness is impressed. But on Instagram, the #bagelandloxrecord is . . . everything.
