Stars With Clothing Lines
Some stars can successfully take the plunge into fashion. Others should just thank their lucky stars that they have day job!
As a D-list celebrity and the mother of train-wreck Lindsay Lohan, one would think Dina Lohan would have her hands full. But it seems the mom of three has decided to add fashion designer to one of her many titles, making an announcement Wednesday that she would be creating her own line of women's shoes and becoming a national spokeswoman for LoveMyShoes.com. The news got us thinking about other celebrities who have ventured into fashion with their own clothing and accessory lines. Some stars have created empires with their fashion lines, while others have simply embarrassed themselves. Take a look at our list of some of the most notable attempts at making a foray into fashion and judge for yourself. Who has potential and who should stick to their day jobs? (Source: AP)read more
Like her mama, Lindsay Lohan has also made the move into fashion. First, she came out with a line of leggings which apparently sell pretty well (we'd hope so, it's pretty hard to mess up leggings.) But her next move indicates she is in serious career trouble as it seems she has neither a day job as an actress or a backup as a designer. The troubled young (former?) actress debuted her first collection as creative director for the house of Emanuel Ungaro earlier this week at Paris fashion week to disastrous reviews. Here’s hoping for Lindsay’s sake that she can get her act together and win back her former status as a respected actress. Otherwise, well, at least there are leggings. (Source: AP)read more
Former Spice Girl Victoria Beckham is best known these days for her fashion ensembles on the red carpet and in paparazzi photos. But Beckham has recently established herself as one of the fashion industry’s hottest designers with her Victoria Beckham Collection of ten body conscious dresses that are inspired by the tailoring and close fitting styles that defined the 1950s. Countless celebrities have been seen wearing the collection including Jennifer Lopez, Elle Macpherson and Kelly Ripa. And since Beckham really didn’t have a day job per se, it looks like this one’s a hit. (Source: AP)read more
In 1999, rapper Jay-Z founded his own clothing line called Rocawear with his then-business partner Damon Dash. The brand exploded and became one of the hottest selling clothing-lines on the market, with estimated annual sales around $800 million. The success, coupled with his savvy approach to both music and business solidified Jay-Z’s role as one of Hip Hop and fashion’s most successful moguls of all time.read more
Jennifer Lopez was one of the first well-known celebrities to delve into the fashion world at the height of her music and acting fame. In 2003, she launched J.Lo by Jennifer Lopez, a line that included coats, dresses, jeans, T-shirts and accessories. In 2005, she launched a higher-end line called Sweetface, followed by a new juniors line called JustSweet in 2007. Since then, Lopez has retired J.Lo but continues to produce several of the best selling perfumes on the market. While Lopez’s line folded, she will forever be the star associated with balancing a successful clothing line and Hollywood career. (Source: Reuters)read more
As her career as a singer and actress wanes, Jessica Simpson continues to bring in substantial revenue with her backup career as a designer of a lifestyle brand that consists of shoes, coats, handbags and accessories. It’s a good thing too, as Simpson has been plagued by rumors that she was dropped from her country music label. She is currently producing a reality show, but perhaps Jess might consider making designing her full time gig.read more
“Charlie’s Angles” star Jaclyn Smith is often referred to as the “godmother” of celebrity clothing lines. She forged a partnership with K-Mart to design her Jaclyn Smith line that has proven to be quite lucrative for both parties. Annual sales for the company have been said to reach at least $600 million annually. (Source: AP)read more
Musician and Emmy-award winning actor Justin Timberlake is the co-founder of the denim line William Rast with friend and business partner Trace Ayala. The line launched in 2006 and has shown for several seasons at New York Fashion Week. While the shows often attract the likes of such fashion bigwigs as Vogue Editor in Chief Anna Wintour, the line is not often seen on celebrities. While it may still be too early to say, we humbly suggest Justin that you stick with your day job. (Source: Reuters)read more
Like his former girlfriend Jennifer Lopez, Sean “P.Diddy” Combs’ name is as synonymous with fashion as it is with his music and acting career. The line launched in 1998 to rave reviews and won substantial commercial success with annual sales holding steady at about $100 million. Since then, Combs has invested in such major lines as Zac Posen and Liz Claiborne’s Enyce. The line is also known for it’s massive ad campaigns, with their Times Square billboard once boasting the honor of being the largest print ad in the entire area.read more
Singer and actress Beyonce Knowles launched the ready-to-wear line House of Dereon with her mother and stylist Tina Knowles in 2004. From there, Knowles and younger sister Solange launched the juniors line Dereon that was geared toward younger consumers with funky fashions at more affordable prices. The line has been featured on Oprah and The Tyra Banks Show. The line has held steady commercially, but is often critized for over-the-top designs, most notably with its campaign for girls that featured children in full makeup and high heels.
