New York Times Magazine reveals how liberal ‘The View’ audience is with glowing feature

The New York Times Magazine gushed over ABC’s News' "The View" with a lengthy cover story published Wednesday that reveals just how liberal the daytime gabfest’s audience is.

Writer Amanda Fitzsimons, making her debut for the magazine, notes that “The View” has emerged as an important place for politicians to be seen in the story that is over 5,000 mostly-complimentary words.

Headlined, “How ‘The View’ became the most important political TV show in America,” the feature notes that politicians didn’t always take the show seriously but “now it’s an essential campaign stop” for both Democrats and Republicans.

“They thought we were a bunch of ladies who lunch,” co-host Joy Behar told Fitzsimons. “Now they come on because we’re influential.”

While the show welcomes guests from both sides of the aisle, the audience is largely made up of liberal women.

“Almost 65 percent of its viewers who are registered to vote are Democrats, and only 12.6 percent are Republicans,” Fitzsimons wrote, citing consumer-intelligence company MRI-Simmons. “72 percent of its audience is female.”

"'The View’ has become a place where Democrats and Republicans alike go to introduce themselves to a national audience, an essential campaign stop. Twelve of the 26 people who have announced that they are running for president in 2020 have already been on the show, with one more, Senator Elizabeth Warren, already scheduled,” Fitzsimons wrote.

Political segments make up 60 percent of the show these days, according to Fitzsimons, who notes that many viewers watch the show out of hate.

“Just as Behar has a knack for making pronouncements that seem perfectly engineered to make Tucker Carlson want to tear his hair out, [Meghan] McCain presses buttons for a certain kind of liberal who finds her views the apotheosis of white privilege -- as does her tendency to lose her composure or name-drop her father,” she writes.

The story also reveals other tidbits, including that President Trump’s former personal lawyer Michael Cohen convinced Behar to quit drinking Diet Coke and White House officials sometimes contact the hosts during commercial breaks.

The New York Times is often criticized for leaning left and is frequently mocked by President Trump. Meanwhile, “The View” has regained relevance by criticizing the president on a regular basis. As the story points out, Trump was a regular guest on “The View” prior to his decision to run for president but has not appeared since calling in from the campaign trail in 2015.
