Tens of staffers at the venerable Washington, D.C. journal The New Republic announced Friday that they would leave the publication rather than go along with a radical restructuring of the outlet under its current operating team.
Approximately 28 staffers and contributors said in a group memo they had resigned. On Thursday, the publishing company, owned by Facebook co-founder Chris Hughes, removed top editor Franklin Foer and longtime senior staffer Leon Wieseltier and said Gabriel Snyder, a veteran of several prominent digital media outlets, would take over as editor.
Print frequency is to be reduced severely and operations are to move to New York City from Washington.
The New Republic celebrated its 100th anniversary last month.
