Museum of Contemporary Art Gala: Style Hits and Misses

Who dazzled at the MOCA gala and whose look fell flat?

  • MOCA Gala 2009
It was a night of elegance, style and fashion forward looks at the 2009 MOCA 30th Anniversary Gala in Los Angeles last night. Stars like Eva Mendes, Brad and Angelina and Zoe Saldana brought out edgy looks straight from the runways in an exciting style event. But while many of the looks were stunning, some were just a tad over the top for our tastes. Take a look at our picks for who looked hot and who looked ridiculous. (Source: AP/Reuters)

  • Rose McGowan
Hit: Few women play the bombshell role as well as actress Rose McGowan, who did not disappoint in this stunning red Donna Karan gown from the pre-fall 2009 collection. Like Manson, McGowan is one of those few women who can pull off a look that few others can only dream of doing. But from her red hair to red lips to minimal accessories, we are loving this look. • Zoe_Saldana
Miss: Actress Zoe Saldana certainly gets credit for taking a chance in this Marchesa 2009 gown. And while the gown is a showstopper, something about the cut of the dress -- be it the non-flattering waist or the awkward length -- leaves something to be desired. Saldana's look is the classic case of a dress that works well on runways, but doesn't translate as well in real life. (Source: Reuters)

  • Kate Beckinsale
Hit: Kate Beckinsale is nothing short of stunning in arguably the best look of the night in this Andrew GN green gown. Beckinsale played the part of the glamorous Hollywood star perfectly, from the draping of the dress, to her minimal accessories, sleek updo and dark nails to compliment the midnight hue. (Source: AP)

  • Shirley Manson
Hit: We know some people will think we are crazy, but at least hear us out. Yes, on first glance, we have to admit that we weren't crazy about Shirley Manson's Marchesa gown. Something about the Elvira meets Hollywood glamour is strange, but somehow also strangely appealing on the Garbage frontwoman. Maybe it's just our own excitement at seeing the redhead beauty back on the red carpet, but we find ourselves loving this look more and more. But ladies, don't try this at home, unless you're a rock star of course. (Source: Reuters)

  • Marisa Tomei
Miss: The color of Marisa Tomei's pink vintage Jean Desses Couture cocktail gown is absolutely stunning, but the length and cut of the dress remains a little too costume-like for our tastes. We know that the "Mad Men" Betty Draper fashion craze continues to make appearances on red carpets, but we just feel that the world isn't quite ready to return to full on tulle and satin just yet. What's next, poodle skirts and saddle shoes? (Source: AP)

  • Jessica Alba
Hit: Wearing the favored designer of the night, Jessica Alba played it safe and looked lovely in a Prada spring 2010 gown with a red clutch and pumps. The look was timeless and classic, but we have to admit, we would have liked to have seen Alba take more of a chance.  (Source: AP)

  • Kate Bosworth
Miss: Kate Bosworth's Proenza Schouler cocktail dress is appealing enough and looks nice on the star, but between the slightly ill fit, messy hair and minimal makeup, the look does little to thrill us. (Source: AP)

  • Eva_Mendes
Hit: Eva Mendes wore a nude color Miu Miu dress with an embellished bodice, nude platforms and a hair feathered hair accessory. The look was in keeping with Mendes' favored sexy style, but didn't sacrifice any elegance. (Source: AP)

  • Gwen Stefani and Gavin Rossdale
Miss: With husband Gavin Rossdale on her arm, Gwen Stefani worked the red carpet in a Dolce & Gabbana white boustier and tapered genie pants. While Stefani is the queen of taking risks on the red carpet, we weren't thrilled with the look that did little to flatter Stefani's figure. (Source: AP)

  • Ciara
Miss: There's no doubt that singer Ciara looked sexy at the MOCA gala, but something about the black keyhole cocktail dress seemed boring and even a little inappropriate for the tone of the night's style.  (Source: AP)

  • Christina_Ricci
Hit: Christina Ricci looked elegant and edgy in her Prada dress, black pumps and blunt-cut bangs. The look was glamorous and sexy, especially with her waist cinched in by an embellished belt. (Source: AP)

  • Chloe Sevigny
Miss: Chloe Sevigny has never been the kind of star to play it safe and her Miu Miu dress was no exception. We appreciate Chloe's aesthetic, but something about the turtleneck, butterfly chest design and long-strap purse doesn't quite do it for us. (Source: AP)
