Among those in the entertainment world who are mourning the death of comedian and fashion critic Joan Rivers is Salma Hayek, who at some point in her career was the subject of one Rivers’ fashion take downs.
“She’s an icon,” Hayek told E! News at the Toronto Film Festival premiere of her new animated film “The Prophet. “It won’t be the same without her – red carpets will not be the same without her.”
Hayek, whose husband Francois-Henri Pinault owns the fashion houses holding Gucci, Stella McCartney, Alexander McQueen and Yves Saint Laurent, said that Rivers commentary on “Fashion Police” was “OK.”
“She invented a whole way of making fun a little bit of fashion,” she said. “We’re going to miss her.”
Rivers died Sept. 4 at age 81 just days after suffering complications during a throat operation in New York City.
She was laid to rest following a star-studded funeral in New York on Sunday, where Howard Stern delivered the eulogy, Tony Award winner Audra McDonald sang “Smile” and bagpipers played “New York, New York.”
The New York City Gay Men’s Chorus sang Broadway hits including “Hey Big Spender” and Hugh Jackman ended the memorial with “Quiet Please, There’s a Lady on Stage.”
Rivers was a trailblazer for all comics, but especially for women. The raspy-voiced blonde with the brash New York accent was a TV talk show host, stage, film and TV actress, fashion critic, and she sold a line of jewelry.
Soon after Rivers’ death was announced, celebrity blogger Perez Hilton paid tribute to the late comedian with an emotional Instagram post.
“My heart is so heavy right now,” he wrote in a long post. “Her heart was as big as her talent, which was still super sharp! When I saw her perform in June she did an entire hour-long show and was so vibrant and funny!... She was a pioneer and a true icon!”
