In the FOXlight: The Cast of Broadway's 'Dames at Sea' Shares a Toe-Tapping Tip

Ahoy mateys! On this edition of "In the Foxlight," Michael Tammero takes us to the Helen Hayes Theatre for a sneak preview of the hit musical "Dames at Sea" — and even gets a tap-dancing lesson with the show's stars. "It's a celebration of the movie-musical," says Randy Skinner, the director and choreographer. "It follows the role of Ruby, played by Elosie Kropp, and it's her journey when she arrives in New York fresh from Utah, dreaming of being a Broadway star." As it just so happens, Ruby's tale is also a classic case of art imitating life, as Kropp, too, has tapped her way to Broadway. And, as her co-star Danny Gardner (Lucky) can attest, it takes a lot of practice (as well as stretching and hot baths) to help the dancers make it through the grueling rehreasals. "So it's sort of that thing of, if you can do it three times in a row, you can do it one time." Afterward, the cast taught Tammero to perform an "Irish" tap step — sort of — but he's still got a long way to go if he wants to catch up to Gardner. Are you up for the challenge?
