Glamour Honors Inspiring and Powerful Women at 2014 Women of the Year Awards

On Monday night, Glamour magazine brought together a powerful list of women for their 24th annual Women of the Year Awards, which honors courageous and inspiring women across all industries. Whether starring in the latest Hollywood films or taking on the hottest political issues, these ladies all have one thing in common — they are positive role models for women of all ages. READ: Misty Copeland Dances Her Way to the Top, Inspires in New Ad Campaign Oscar winning actress Lupita Nyong’o, who graced the magazine's cover this past November, received Glamour's prestigious award as "The Breathrough” woman of the year. “It’s very humbling,” Nyong’o says. “There’s amazing women who have been honored for all sorts of things, all sorts of achievements in the world — literally saving lives — and to be honored among them is really a humbling experience.” Nyong’o accepted her award with tears of joy and praised her grandfather, who passed eight years ago, for his support of the advancement of education for women in Kenya.  "Orange is the New Black" actress Laverne Cox also hit the red carpet in an elegant, royal blue gown, catching the eye of everyone in the room. Earlier this year, Cox became the first openly transgender person to be nominated for an Emmy, and on Monday, Glamour honored her with “The Advocate” award for speaking on LGBT rights. “It makes me feel like I have a huge responsibility,” she laughs. “I’ve been waiting for this moment my entire life, where transgender people are accepted into the mainstream. I feel really blessed that I can be the vessel for this inevitable and historic moment tonight.” READ: Modern Day Amelia Earhart Inspires Girls to Fly And for anyone looking to climb the corporate ladder, Arianna Huffington had some exciting words about women in the workforce, and how to get there. “I love the fact that so many women now can do anything," said the editor-in-chief of the Huffington Post, who was in attendance to present an award. "[Women] can code, they can run companies and do it differently without burning out by taking care of themselves. My main [advice for women] is to be thriving — not just successful, thriving!”  Other influential women being honored with Women of the Year Awards were Mindy Kaling (taking home the award for "The Lady Boss"), Chelsea Clinton ("The Women’s Champion"), Sarah Burton ("The Visionary"), Robin Roberts ("The Survivor"), Samantha Power ("The Ambassador"), Sylvia Earle ("The Explorer" and the Lifetime Achievement Award) and The Girl Project ("The Bravest Girls in the World").
