Fans, friends and family of Dominican rapper Monkey Black are still in shock over the unexplained stabbing that took his life Wednesday night on the streets of Barcelona.
Catalan newspaper La Vanguardia reported that the incident happened around 9:30 p.m. outside a bar in Sant Adrià de Besòs, a highly industrial city on the Mediterranean coast.
Monkey Black, born Leonardo Michael Flores Ozuna, 27, was reportedly attacked by two men at the entrance of a bar. Police are still investigating the killing.
The suspected murderers inadvertently left some personal objects in the bar, police said.
Witnesses to the killing said that the singer was stabbed then shuffled 65 feet to the entrance of the bar, where he fell over and died.
Since the murder, fans and friends of the musician have been leaving candles and flowers at the site.
In an interview with the Dominican TV network Sin, the mother requested that her son's remains be brought to his country. His father and manager, Jose Altagracia Fabian, told a different Santo Domingo network, Canal 11, that he kept in close touch with his son but it had been hard to reach him lately.
The Dominican Republic consulate said it would take a few days for his body to be returned to the country because the police investigation is continuing.
Monkey Black had been living in Barcelona since 2010 and was married, though the couple had been estranged and living apart for a few months, according to La Vanguardia.
On the Canal 11 report, Flores’ friend and music promoter, Santiago Matias, said that he and others had been trying to convince Monkey Black to return to the Dominican Republic because they felt that "he was wasting his time in Spain.”
Multiple expressions of solidarity and shock have flooded social media since the news of the death broke Wednesday.
Monkey Black began his musical career in mid-2006 and became known in his country for his number "Tienen miedo."
