Amanda Bynes Though Amanda always seemed level headed and sweet compared to some of her wild celebrity peers, the former Nickelodeon starlet took a turn for the worse in 2013. It started with strange behavior on Twitter, where she constantly spoke out on her need for more plastic surgery, made crude attempts to seduce musician Drake and posted photos of herself looking increasingly less recognizable and wearing very little clothing. In May, she was arrested for allegedly throwing a bong out the window of her high-rise apartment window in midtown Manhattan, and she showed up to court looking dazed in a ratty blonde wig. By July, she was involuntarily placed on psychiatric hold after setting fire to the driveway of a California home, and her parents were finally granted temporary conservatorship. She is currently getting help in a Malibu rehabilitation facility. (Reuters)

    Charlie Sheen

Charlie Sheen Charlie Sheen has hardly been the portrait of wholesome over the years, so to shock the world with his behavior is no small feat. The "Two and a Half Men" star left nearly everyone shocked when he unleashed a media blitz, where he blasted everyone from his bosses at CBS to his ex-wives, all while offering up bizarre declarations and one-liners. But on a darker note, many expressed concern that America was watching television's highest-paid actor break down. His children were removed from his home after his estranged wife Brooke Mueller was granted a temporary restraining order against the actor following claims he threatened her several times, and that her children should not be raised in an environment where Sheen's self-described "epic" partying seemed to be a regular occurrence.  FOX411 POLL: Who Is the Craziest Celebrity in Hollywood?

Lindsay Lohan Lindsay Lohan has become more famous for her stints in jail, mug shot collection and apparent self-destructive behavior in the last few years than she ever was for a film. After violating the terms of her 2007 DUI probation in 2010, Lohan found herself behind bars, followed by court-enforced rehab. But within weeks of release, she tested positive for cocaine and went back to rehab with a shattered career and rumors of heavy debt. The former Disney "darling" then went on to allegedly add jewelry theft to her resume. And just when she was seemingly starting to get her life back on track in 2013, her mom, Dina, was arrested on Long Island for driving under the influence. Never a dull moment in the Lohan household. Mel and Oksana

Mel Gibson It was hard to pick just ONE Mel Gibson meltdown, as the actor has had a quite a few over the years (who could forget his infamous "sugar t*ts" arrest. But in late 2010, Gibson took meltdown to a completely different level.  Numerous taped telephone conversations featuring Gibson embarking on racist, sexist and profanity-laced rants were “leaked” online amid a bitter child custody battle between the A-list actor and his former flame, Oksana Grigorieva, in which Gibson threatened to burn down her house, put her in a "f***ing rose garden" and called her some of the worst insults most of us had ever heard. Somewhere out there, Mel Gibson is simultaneously cursing the digital age and thanking Charlie Sheen. FOX411 POLL: Who Is the Craziest Celebrity in Hollywood?

Paula Abdul Paula Abdul was seemingly on top of the world when her career was revived with her spot as a judge on "American Idol." But since then, she has had countless meltdowns, including one in 2008 where she was reportedly overheard yelling at someone at LAX in a "poltergeist voice." Yikes. Then of course, there were the multiple appearances where she appeared to be suffering from "exhaustion" and on medication for her back that caused her to always seem, well, like she was on medication. In 2011, she called 911 on her boyfriend saying he had trapped her in the car. Later, her rep downplayed the call as simply a heated argument with "a loved one." Tom Cruise Oprah Meltdown

Tom Cruise Once one of America's most beloved actors, Tom Cruise's descent into the unusual began with his romance with Katie Holmes. In 2005, a giddy Cruise appeared on "Oprah" to discuss his new romance with the "Dawson's Creek" star. What happened set off what Cruise called a "confluence" of bad publicity for him.  During the interview he went crazy expressing his feelings for Holmes, jumping up and down on Oprah's couch and leaving the talk show queen (and her audience) nearly speechless. But it wasn't over. From there, Cruise's media blitz included criticism of actress Brooke Shields for taking anti-depression drugs after the birth of her child, a tirade against "Today" host Matt Lauer for suggesting that psychiatric treatment might help some patients, YouTube videos and revelations about Cruise's religion and reports that he purchased a sonogram machine to keep in his home during Holmes pregnancy. Cruise went on to get even further involved in the Church of Scientology, finally alienating Katie Holmes, who filed for divorce in 2012.

    Britney Shaves Her Head

Britney Spears In 2007, pop princess Britney Spears was in bald, er, bad shape. The singer shaved her head in what seemed to be the most outlandish and sad cry for help after a year of divorces, hard-partying, rehab trips, sex tape scandals and strange accents. But who could forget her locking herself in a bathroom, refusing to turn over her children to the custody of their father. Then came the paparazzi-documented trip to the hospital, where she was required to stay overnight.  These days, Spears seems to have gotten her act under control. But it doesn't save her from a spot on the list of infamous breakdowns.

Michael Richards "Seinfeld" star Michael Richards' infamous racially-charged rant was such a shock due in part to the lovable, light-hearted nature of his character, Cosmo Kramer, on the hit NBC show. But in 2006, Richards' lovable alter ego was nowhere to be found when he screamed the N-word at hecklers in what appeared to be a total meltdown at a comedy club.  He later apologized, saying rage, not racism, fueled the tirade. But the damage was already done.

    Whitney Houston and Bobby Brown

Whitney Houston In the early 1990s, Whitney Houston was on the road to becoming the undisputed queen of pop music. Between mega-successful albums and a starring role in 1995's "The Bodyguard," it seemed the singer and actress was on the brink of absolute super-stardom. But as we all know, Whitney took a turn down Hollywood's road to crazytown. Her romance with troubled singer Bobby Brown became the stuff of tabloids, as Brown was arrested on drug and alcohol charges multiple times, and Houston's two trips to rehab.  The couple divorced in April 2007 after 14 years of marriage (and a reality show), and Whitney met a tragic end when she drowned in a hotel bathtub in 2012 due, in part, to chronic cocaine use.

    Andrew Dice Clay

Comedian Andrew Dice Clay's career already seemed to be slowing down in 2003, but it seems he put the final nail in the coffin when he appeared on a CNN business news show and spouted out profanities.  Clay completely lost it when the show's host asked him about his career and his time away from Hollywood when he was managing a gym. Seems like a valid question to us ...

    Courtney Love

Courtney Love Party-girl rocker Courtney Love has had so many public meltdowns, she even admits she paved the road for Britney Spears' breakdown. The Hole singer has been on and off drugs, up and down in weight and can be seen looking everything from haggard to glamorous on any given day. Moreover, accusations of her owing money seem to play like broken records. She has been accused of losing and stealing a multitude of items in recent years. In 2010, celebrity jeweler Jacobson & Co. filed a lawsuit against Love claiming she hasn’t returned almost $114,000 worth of accessories.  She was also forced to cough up $430G to a fashion designer after unleashing a Twitter tirade against the woman.

Mariah Carey Pop diva Mariah Carey is a married mom of two. But the singer didn't always have it together. Back in 2001, following what Charlie Sheen would no-doubt call the "epic" flop that was her film "Glitter," Carey started acting a little strange.  She began posting messages to fans on her official website saying she was "trying to understand things in life," and that she "can't trust anybody anymore,"  Shortly afterward, she showed up pushing an ice cream cart on MTV's TRL wearing nothing but a T-shirt (which she later stripped off in front of the audience, leaving on a tiny tank top and hot pants) and rambling on about looking at "rainbows" and how the unannounced appearance was her "vacation" and "therapy session." A few days later, she checked herself into a hospital for "exhaustion." Which in Hollywood-speak means "crazy."

    Robert Downey, Jr.

Robert Downey, Jr. Robert Downey, Jr. may be riding high as Hollywood royalty, but the reformed bad-boy was once an industry outcast.  Throughout the 1990's, he was in and out several drug rehab centers, failed two court-mandated drug tests and as a result, spent four months in Los Angeles County Jail and almost a year in State Prison.  One memorable instance of his ridiculous behavior was in 1996 when he somehow made his way into a neighbor’s bed while under the influence of a controlled substance and fell asleep. Not exactly what that poor soul was expecting to see. The now sober Downey seems to have his life and career back on track.
