All things considered, from a business standpoint, 2009 was probably the worst year in the history of the automobile industry. It's a shame, because as far as the vehicles themselves were concerned, it was one of the best. Too bad no one had any money to buy them. Fox Car Report didn't get to drive everything this past year - the VW GTI and Porsche Panamera will have to wait for the turn of the decade - but we did our best to get behind the wheels of the cars that were the most significant to you. Plus a little insanity like the 250 mph flex-fuel Koenigsegg CCXR, just for fun. Unlike other lists that tell you what the best car of 2010 will be, we adhere to the truism that hindsight is 20/20, and true greatness eventually wins out over infatuation and first impressions. So, in no particular order, here is our entirely subjective list of the five vehicles that, for one reason or another, have stood the test of time...so far.
The 2010 Equinox is perhaps the most groundbreaking vehicle Chevrolet has ever made. No, really. It combines full size passenger accommodations with utility worthy of the ‘U’ in SUV, all while delivering the fuel economy of a midsize sedan - 32 mpg. Crossovers have been around for a while, but the Equinox may be the first one truly worthy of the name. Being the most fuel efficient car in America should be enough to earn a spot on this list, but it isn't. What sets the 2010 Toyota Prius apart from previous editions is that it is now a good car first, environmentally friendly car second. With a well-integrated hybrid system, roomy interior, and handling that doesn’t make you feel like you’re at the helm of some 1970’s sci-fi movie prop, it’s no surprise this is a top seller. Still looks like a sci-fi movie prop, though. Click here for a full review of the Toyota Prius We also liked: Ford Fusion Hybridread moreFoxnews.comShare
Sometimes myopia is a good thing to have. If nothing else, the 2009 Dodge Ram proves that Chrysler can build class-leading vehicles when it sets its mind to it. People laughed when they heard it had wimpy coil spring suspension favoring ride quality over cargo hauling capability, instead of strong leaf springs like every other truck on the block. Then they drove it. Then they drove it with a 390 HP HEMI V8. Some of them never went home. Click here for a full review of the Dodge Ram We Also Liked: Ford F-150 SVT Raptorread moreFoxnews.comShare
Electric cars are coming, soon, but for now the Tesla Roadster is still the only game in town. And if it has anything, it’s game. Combining the acceleration of a supercar with green credentials that rival those of a geothermal-powered recycled paper recycling facility, the latest version of the $109G rail gun is now available in a Sport model with an extra dose of wattage and a racecar-type adjustable suspension. Sure, with a maximum range of 244 miles, and a recharge time measured in hours, you can only enjoy the fun in short bursts, but if it went any further the muscles in your face would probably cramp from smiling for hours on end. The future is here, and it’s expensive, but for those who can afford it, it's definitely worth it. Before you say anything about Pontiac going out of business and how this car shouldn't qualify for any 'best of' list, remember, Favorite Five is a look back at the past year, not what’s to come. Besides, at the time of this writing there are still 3 new Pontiac G8 GXPs available at dealers. There shouldn’t be. Few sedans in the history of the automobile have combined the size, speed, and handling of the G8 GXP, and none of them have been American. If this family-size Corvette is the ghost of GM past, then consider us bewitched.
