After teasing the world for several years with a string of concepts, Toyota has officially unveiled the production version of its newest sports car, the GT 86, which will be sold in the United States next year as the Scion FR-S.![gt82]()
Developed in conjunction with Subaru, the GT 86 is a two-door rear-wheel-drive 2+2 that's about the same size as a Nissan 370Z. The lightweight coupe is powered by an all-new four-cylinder boxer engine that produces 197 hp in European and Japanese trim.![gt83]()
The GT 86 features a seriously sporty interior with a center-mounted tachometer, racing-style steering wheel, aluminum pedals, contrast stitching and a handbrake lever placed perfectly for drifting. A six-speed manual transmission is standard and an automatic with as many gears will also be available.![gt84]()
The front seats are heavily-bolstered and ready for the track, while the rears are best left folded down to expand the size of the trunk.![gt85]()
Toyota obviously thinks the GT 86 is pretty hot, and with a 53:47 front to rear weight distribution and a low center of gravity courtesy of the flat-four engine it does promise to be a lot of fun.
