In this July 5, 2016 photo, medical staff attach a titanium beak on a red-crowned crane at an animal hospital in Guangzhou in south China's Guangdong province. A red-crowned crane residing in a southern Chinese zoo has gained a new lease on life after veterinarians replaced half of its damaged beak with a section made from 3D-printed titanium. The bird named Lili lost about half of the top of her beak in a fight with another bird at the Guangzhou zoo, rendering her unable to catch fish or eat, according to the official Xinhua News Agency. After using plastic beak sections to find the best fit, technicians printed up one made of titanium, chosen for its strength and resistance to rust. It was then installed in a half-hour operation and Lili was soon back to catching fish in a bucket. Red-crowned cranes are an endangered species, with just 2,750 living in the wetlands of Russia, northeast China, Mongolia, Japan and the Korean Peninsula. The birds, which can live for as many as 70 years, are revered in Chinese culture as symbols of longevity and nobility and in Japan, the red-crowned crane is the official logo of the national airline.
