British_Train_Robber_Released

August 7: Michael Biggs, son of Ronnie Biggs, one of Britain's most notorious criminals, holds up his father's release papers, outside the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital, in Norwich, England, where Biggs is being treated for pneumonia. Jack Straw, Britain's justice secretary, said he was releasing Biggs on compassionate grounds because he is near death. Biggs was part of a gang that robbed a mail train in an August 1963 heist that netted 2.6 million pounds - worth about $68 million today - during which the train driver, Jack Mills, was hit over the head and left unconscious. After being convicted of the theft, Biggs escaped from prison and spent decades on the run, living and raising a family in Brazil.
