UNITED NATIONS – The U.N. secretary-general says he has been trying to build "a constructive relationship" with President Donald Trump and he hopes that will be the U.S. leader's message when they meet during next week's gathering of world leaders at the United Nations.
Antonio Guterres said at a news conference Wednesday if that's what Trump conveys to him "that message will be well received."
Asked about Trump's policy of "America First," Guterres said, "It's my deep belief that the best way to preserve American interests is to engage positively in global affairs and to engage positively in support to multilateral organizations like the U.N."
Guterres said he has no special message for Trump on Myanmar and North Korea, which are top global concerns, or climate change, which he called "a serious threat."
