British police have appealed for help in identifying a human finger discovered in London nearly seven years ago.

The Metropolitan Police force says the digit, belonging to a man, was found by a dog in the Bloomsbury area of the city in December 2010. No other human remains were found nearby.

The site was near the spot where a suicide bomber blew up a bus on July 7, 2005, and police investigated whether the finger was linked to the bombing — but found no match.

DNA from the finger also hasn't been matched to any criminal investigation or missing person.

Constable Tom Boon said Thursday that police "have now exhausted all lines of inquiry."

He urged anyone with information that could shed light on the mystery to come forward.
