The head of the Organization of American States is recommending to regional governments that Venezuela be suspended from the Washington-based group unless general elections are held soon.

OAS Secretary General Luis Almagro makes the request in a 75-page report in which he says the socialist administration of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro has broken the country's democratic order by disregarding the results of 2015 legislative elections and jailing dozens of opponents.

Maduro's government has yet to comment but in the past has accused Almagro of doing the bidding of the U.S. government and trying to isolate Venezuela.
