Greek authorities say they have located and rescued 19 refugees or other migrants in a crippled boat in the north Aegean Sea, about 17 hours after receiving a distress call.

The Merchant Marine Ministry says three of the boat's passengers were unconscious. All are being taken to the northern port town of Kavala. Their nationalities were not immediately clear, the ministry said.

The boat was located Wednesday afternoon east of the island of Thassos, following a large search operation involving helicopters and coast guard vessels. Greek authorities got a distress call from the vessel late Tuesday night.

More than 170,000 people have reached Greece by sea from Turkey this year, most before a series of European border closures in March. Some 61,000 remain trapped in Greece.
