A top Pakistani investigator says police have arrested the father and ex-husband of a British woman of Pakistani origin who was killed last month in what authorities suspect was an "honor killing."

Samia Shahid's family buried her, claiming she died of natural causes. Police later concluded the 28-year-old was strangled to death.

Abu Bakar Khuda Bux said Monday that the woman's father, Mohammad Shahid, and her former husband, Mohammad Shakeel, are prime suspects in her murder.

Bux says they were arrested on Sunday.

After her death, Shahida's second husband, Mukhtar Kazim, accused the family of killing her after luring her back to Pakistan on the pretext of her father's illness. The police reopened the case and eventually declared it a murder.

Pakistan reports nearly 1,000 so-called "honor killings" every year.
