A local government official says an attack by rebels in eastern Congo has killed at least seven civilians and wounded three others.

Justin Mukanya, administrator of Rutshuru, said dozens of homes were burned in the attack overnight Sunday in Kabanda, about 180 kilometers (112 miles) north of Goma in North Kivu province.

He could not identify which group staged the attack in an area where there have been ethnic tensions.

Multiple rebel groups in eastern Congo are fighting for control of the mineral-rich region.

The director of a local rights group that tracks civilian deaths, Omar Kavota, said at least 17 civilians have been killed in several attacks in the region since Saturday.

Kavota said the attacks come after the killing of a Mai-Mai militia member in Kibirizi.
