MANILA, Philippines – Communist guerrillas in the Philippines have vowed to make more explosives and use them in more attacks at the risk of scuttling scheduled peace talks.
President Rodrigo Duterte has warned that if another soldier or civilian dies from a rebel land mine, he will call off the talks scheduled to resume Aug. 20 in Norway after long being stalled.
The Communist Party of the Philippines rejected Duterte's demand and instead ordered rebels Monday to step up the manufacture of explosives and their use in guerrilla attacks. The rebels say they do not use banned land mines but instead make and use mines that are detonated remotely.
Duterte issued the threat over the weekend after visiting the wake of three soldiers killed by a rebel mine in the south.
