The Chinese Foreign Ministry has confirmed media reports that authorities have detained a Japanese citizen on suspicion of endangering China's state security.
The ministry said in a statement faxed to The Associated Press on Sunday that the Japanese Embassy in China has been notified about the investigation into the Japanese national.
The statement did not provide any other details.
Japan's Kyodo News Agency reported, cited a diplomatic source, that a Japanese man who had been visiting Beijing in July might have been detained on possible allegations of spying.
Kyodo says the man worked for a group that set up exchanges between the two countries and that he had planned to stay in Beijing between July 11 and 15, but failed to return to Japan.
