The European Union's executive has again chided the Polish government over its treatment of the country's top constitutional court, and is giving Warsaw three months to fix a series of perceived flaws or face sanctions.
EU Commissioner Frans Timmermans gave the Polish authorities recommendations to change the law on its Constitutional Tribunal to make sure that all citizens get essential democratic rights of protection.
Timmermans called the protection of the rule of law "one of the pillars of our union."
Even though Polish lawmakers approved a final version of legislation on the court last week, Timmermans said that several "fundamental concerns are still unresolved."
The EU can go as far as scrapping Poland's voting rights in the EU, but several steps still need to be taken for that to happen.
