Prosecutors say they have formally charged a German man with murder in the slaying of an 11-year-old girl on New Year's Day.

The girl died after being shot in the back of the head while out celebrating in the town of Oberaurach, north of Nuremberg.

Bamberg prosecutors said Friday that the 53-year-old had been angered by loud fireworks and fired at random at a group of women and children.

The suspect, who worked as a driver at a nearby prison, has denied intending to kill anybody.

But prosecutors say the man, who legally owned four firearms, knew he risked fatally injuring someone with his actions.
