U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon is calling on the Security Council to place an immediate arms embargo on South Sudan amid renewed fighting between opposing forces in the capital, Juba.
Ban, speaking to reporters Monday, also called for additional sanctions against South Sudan leaders blocking the existing peace deal and the "fortifying" of the U.N. peacekeeping force there.
Explosions and gunfire continued for a fifth day Monday, including attacks by government forces on the U.N. base and camp that houses thousands of civilians who have fled the violence.
There were eight deaths at the U.N. base on Sunday. Ban singled out the killing of two Chinese peacekeepers for condemnation. He said the compound was caught in a "crossfire."
The U.N. currently has 12,000 peacekeeping troops and police in South Sudan.
