German officials say the planned sale of the Hahn regional airport outside Frankfurt to a Chinese company is likely to be scrapped.

Rhineland-Palatinate state planned to sell its 82.5 percent stake in the airport to Shanghai Yiqian Trading Company, a logistics and construction company. But officials last week suspended the sale, citing doubts about the reliability of the purchaser.

The state's deputy interior minister was dispatched to Shanghai to look into the matter further. Interior Minister Roger Lewentz said Wednesday the official was told that the company hadn't yet submitted documents to get clearance for the purchase — despite earlier assurances that it had.

His ministry said the signs point to the sale process being broken off. Lewentz said two other bidders are ready to resume talks.
