The president of the U.N. General Assembly is hinting that he would like groups or individual countries in the world body to come up with shortlists of candidates to become the next U.N. chief now that the 11 contenders have made their case to the 193 member nations.
According to the U.N. Charter, the secretary-general is chosen by the assembly on the recommendation of the 15-member Security Council.
Mogens Lykketoft said the more that assembly members express their preferences "the more they raise the probability" that the Security Council will recommend a name which is generally accepted by all U.N. members.
Lykketoft spoke to reporters Tuesday after the last two candidates — Argentina's Foreign Minister Susana Malcorra and Slovakia's Foreign Minister Miroslav Lajcak — answered questions from assembly members.
