An Ethiopian official says that armed groups have killed more than 140 people near Ethiopia's border with South Sudan.
Getachew Reda, Ethiopia's communications minister, told the Associated Press on Saturday that the attackers came from South Sudan and killed civilians, including women and children.
He said Ethiopian forces have killed 60 of the attackers and may cross into South Sudan to pursue them.
The attack took place on Friday in Jakawa, in Ethiopia's Gambella region and the minister identified the attackers as members of South Sudan's Murle tribe. He also confirmed that a number of children have been abducted from Ethiopia and taken into South Sudan. He said the latest attack is much larger than past skirmishes.
