Russia's Justice Ministry says it is looking into a Kiev request to transfer filmmaker Oleg Sentsov and three other Ukrainian convicts to Ukraine.

Ukrainian officials have urged Russia to hand over Sentsov and three others to Ukraine, describing them as political prisoners.

Sentsov was convicted of conspiracy to commit terror attacks and sentenced to 20 years in prison. The Crimean native was a vocal opponent of Russia's 2014 annexation of the peninsula. Critics have dismissed his prosecution as revenge for his pro-Ukrainian position.

The Justice Ministry said Friday, according to the Interfax news agency, that Russian prison officials will look into whether the transfer of Sentsov and others is legally possible and submit relevant legal documents to Russian courts, which will have a final say on the matter.
