MOSCOW – Russian police say they have raided the residences of local leaders and adherents of Aum Shinrikyo, the Japanese doomsday cult that carried out a deadly nerve gas attack on the Tokyo subway in 1995.
An Interior Ministry statement Tuesday said the raids were conducted in St. Petersburg and Moscow. There was no immediate word of arrests.
Aum Shinrikyo is banned in Russia.
The raids followed the detention last month in Montenegro of 43 Russians and 15 other foreigners associated with the cult. All 58 were deported.
The cult's attack on the Tokyo subway killed 13 people.
