JOHANNESBURG – Reports from Angola say separatist fighters in northern Cabinda province have killed 30 soldiers in two ambushes this month.
Rede Angola, a news website, reported this week the violence in Cabinda, a province separated from the rest of Angola by Congolese territory.
Rede Angola quoted a separatist movement, the Front for the Liberation of the Enclave of Cabinda, as claiming responsibility for the killings. However, the death toll could not be independently confirmed. Angolan state media have not reported any fighting in Cabinda.
The separatist statement warned foreigners to leave the oil-producing region, the site of fighting between the military and separatists since 1975.
In 2010, two people were killed and eight wounded when a bus transporting Togo's national soccer team came under fire there.
