An arm of the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights is condemning the slaying of a radio journalist in El Salvador.

The regional body's special investigator for freedom of expression said in a statement Tuesday that the killing earlier this month of Nicolas Huberto Garcia apparently at the hands of gang members must be investigated in terms of his work.

Garcia worked for community radio station Expresa in the town of El Jicaro about 70 miles (115 kilometers) west of El Salvador's capital. He had a program devoted to crime prevention.

A journalist group in El Salvador called the Popular Communication Collective has said the March 10 killing stemmed from Garcia's refusal to join the gang and his attention to crime prevention.
