Indonesian police say they killed two suspected militants and identified them as members of China's ethnic Uighur minority.

Police say the two men were shot dead on Tuesday during a gunbattle in central Sulawesi where security forces are hunting for the country's most wanted Islamic radical.

Authorities believe a group of Uighurs entered Indonesia illegally to join forces with local militants.

Indonesian security forces have been intensifying an operation against the East Indonesia Mujahidin network led by Abu Wardah Santoso, Indonesia's most wanted radical.

Local police chief Brig. Gen. Rudy Sufahriady says four other foreigners are believed to be with the group.
