PARIS – The Dutch royal couple took a moment out of their state visit to France to stop in a Parisian cafe — paying their respects at one of the sites targeted in deadly Islamic extremist attacks last year.
King Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima of the Netherlands were greeted Friday by cafe staff under the red awning of Le Carillon in eastern Paris, then sat at a bistro table and chatted with the owner.
The Carillon reopened in January, two months after attackers gunned down customers there and at other nearby cafes in attacks around Paris that killed 130 people.
The Dutch royal visit, focusing on economic and cultural ties, started Thursday with a meeting at the Elysee presidential palace and viewing of Rembrandt portraits at the Louvre museum.
