A senior official in Saxony has criticized police in the east German state for failing to act against hate speech.
Saxony is the birthplace of the anti-Islam PEGIDA movement and has seen a sharp rise in far-right attacks against migrants over the past year.
The state's deputy governor, Martin Dulig, says he wonders whether sympathy for PEGIDA and the nationalist AfD party is greater among police than the average population. In an interview with the weekly Die Zeit published Thursday, Dulig cited a recent incident in the town of Clausnitz, where a mob blocked a bus carrying migrants and shouted "Go home!"
None of the protesters were arrested but a police official later said some migrants were being investigated on suspicion of committing crimes.
