LONDON – A British couple who want to have their relationship recognized as a civil partnership instead of a marriage have lost their case at the High Court.
Rebecca Steinfeld and Charles Keidan argued that they faced discrimination because the law says that only same-sex couples are eligible for civil partnerships.
But the government's lawyers argued that because gay couples can now marry, civil partnerships may be abolished or phased out in a few years. They say it would be costly and complicated to change laws surrounding that in the meantime.
A judge dismissed the couple's claim for judicial review Friday, saying that opposite-sex couples are not disadvantaged compared with gay couples because they can achieve the same rights and protections by getting married, as they always could.
