BENGHAZI, Libya – An influential Libyan lawmaker says the internationally-backed parliament is unlikely to approve a U.N.-brokered unity government aimed at bridging the country's political rift.
Abu Bakr Beira told The Associated Press on Wednesday that the House of Representatives seated in the country's east will not "cave" to international pressure to endorse the U.N.-sponsored peace deal and its new unity government.
He says the peace deal "has no support in the east in the first place," and describes the new cabinet as "nonsense."
A 32-member cabinet was announced Tuesday and supporters have 10 days to secure approval from the House of Representatives.
Libya slid into chaos following the 2011 toppling and killing of dictator Moammar Gadhafi.
